Submissions

New Essex House Press is open for submissions.

We publish transgressive fiction, erotic literature, and work that mainstream publishing won’t touch. If you’re writing the book no one else will publish — the one that’s too dark, too strange, too sexually frank, too politically dangerous, too morally uncomfortable — we want to see it.

We are not looking for polite fiction. We are not looking for careful fiction. We are looking for work that refuses to behave.

What We’re Accepting

Novels and novellas of the following length:

• Novella — roughly 20,000 to 50,000 words
• Novel — 50,000 to 120,000 words

What to Send

• A sample chapter of the work (ideally the opening, but your strongest chapter is fine)
• A complete outline of the book
• A brief note about yourself and the project
• Files in MS Word format (.doc or .docx) only

Response Time

Please allow 4 to 8 weeks before following up. We read every submission personally. The wait means we’re giving yours the attention it deserves.

What We’re Not

We are not a traditional publisher. We are small, independent, and selective. We are looking for voices that sound like no one else — writers who understand that the work is the thing, that discomfort is sometimes the point, and that the books worth writing are often the ones the world would rather forget.
